Steel Grinding Rod

Steel rods are high-quality steel that has undergone various heat treatments to maximize the wear and impact resistance, primarily used as grinding media in rod mills to pulverize or extract materials. They have excellent wear-resistant properties.

 How are steel rods made?

Steel grinding rods are manufactured from specific steel which has the characteristic of breaking up without twisting when wear occurs. This property is essential in maintaining full grinding capacity and avoiding the difficulty of taking out wire-like, worn rods that usually twist and bend into a mass of intertwined wires if breaking does not occur.

In the factory, Though hot rolling processes the microstructure of the steel experiences permanent changes that increase its toughness and ductility. These rods are made with special steel and varying alloys to enhance the performance and properties of rods. They are hardened by microalloying steel and heat treatments.

Manufactured with the best and latest techniques the dimensions of our steel grinding rods can easily be altered according to our client’s needs.

What is a grinding rod used for?

Steel rods commercially are used to construct structures like buildings, bridges, RCC roads, towers, etc. they are known to be a very strong material, Structural steel outmatches most other materials with a stress yield of 50,000 pounds per square inch. in grinding media, they are used in rod mills for three main purposes:

  • Fine Crushing

Rod mill can be used as the fine crushing equipment to replace short-type cone crushers when crushing soft ores. It has a simple configuration, fewer costs, and low dust pollution, which can save a lot of investment in dust removal machines.

  • Prevention of Over-Crushing

When the tungsten ore, tin ore, or other rare metal ores are selected by gravity separation or magnetic separation, a rod mill is often used to prevent over-crushing.

  • Preliminary Grinding for Larger Capacity

In the two-stage grinding process, a rod grinding machine is generally used as the first grinding equipment, which has the advantages of larger production capacity and higher efficiency

The most familiar applications of steel grinding rods are:

  • Steel rods are used in metallurgy and mining for grinding the ores such as iron, copper, and gold.
  • It is used for the processing of extracted minerals.
  • It can be used for grinding coke and friable non-metals.
  • It is used to grind material for glass.
  • It is also used to grind gravel to produce sand.

What is a rod mill?

In contrast to ball mills, rod mills use long rods as the grinding media. Similar to grinding balls in a ball mill, the rods tumble inside the mill to ground the ore. The length to diameter ratio is kept at 1.4 to 1.6 to avoid the situations that contribute to rod charge tangling. Line contact between the rods that extend the length of the mill produces the grinding action to simulate a row of roll crushers, rods spin and tumble in about parallel alignment. As a result, the generation of slimes is reduced, and coarse material is ground more frequently.

What is the working principle of a rod mill?

According to science, there are four basic processes used to break or cut solid particles into smaller pieces: compression, impact, attrition, and cutting. The rod mill uses 2 of them: impact and attrition. The rods grind the materials by tumbling them within the mil and thus creating a reaction to break apart particles.

What is the difference and similarities between ball mill and rod mill?

Both ball mills and rod mills feature a horizontal cylinder-like form that gives them a similar look. They also share comparable parts and operating ideas. However, the performance, grinding media, and application variations between them are different.

  • Differences in performance

Rod mills can be categorized into three categories based on performance: center and side discharge, end and side discharge, and shaft neck overflow discharge. As their names suggest, these different types of rod mills are distinguished by the area through which they are fed. Ball mills are, however, classified into two categories based on how they are discharged; these categories are overflow discharge ball mills and grate discharge ball mills.

  • The difference in grinding medium

Ball mills have a high degree of toughness and manufacturability due to the use of materials including high manganese steel, low carbon alloy, high carbon, and high manganese alloy. However, high carbon steel and 42 Cr Mo steel rods are used to make rods for rod mills. The diameter of this rod, which is employed as a grinding media, ranges from 50 to 100 mm.

  • Difference in application

In essence, ball mills are used for fine grinding, whereas rod mills are used for coarse grinding. Metal and non-metal ores are both ground in ball mills, which are also used in the cement, building, glass and ceramics, and chemical fertilizer industries. However, when crushing soft ores, a rod mill can be used as an exemplary crushing device.

Advantages of using rod mills

Using rod mills for grinding media have its benefits, they include

  • Rod mills produce less grit and slime, lighter crushing, and a product with consistent particle size.
  • Effective sealing, minimizing noise and dust pollution, and environmental protection.
  • The gadget uses little energy, which saves users a lot of money.
  • A simple setup and minimal cost can help you avoid investing in dust removal machinery.

Disadvantages of using rod mills

Rod mills also have their disadvantage in grinding media, they are typically only used for the initial stage of grinding, known as rough grinding, which is when the ore is ground in a rod mill.

What is the difference between Steel Rods and Steel Balls?

Steel rods and Steel balls have their differences that can  be analyzed in terms of selection of materials, particle size, and work site:

  • Selection by material's hardness

Ball mills are well suited for grinding hard materials like slag, iron ore, copper ore, etc. because of their high material adaptability. Grinding brittle materials, such as rare metals, is appropriate for rod mills.

  • Selection by required particle size

The steel rod and the material are in line or surface contact, and most of the coarse particles are first crushed and then ground. Therefore, the finished product is uniform in quality, excellent in particle size, and high in qualification rate.

When the finished product size is required to be 1 to 3mm, it is recommended to use a rod mill. When the required particle size of the finished product is less than 0.5mm, it is recommended to use a ball mill as the finished product has a high degree of fineness, but it is also prone to over-grinding.

  • Selection by the work site

The rod mill has a long-form cylinder and a big floor space, whereas the ball mill has a cylindrical shape that is different. The ball mill's cylinder, which can be either a barrel or a cone, has a length-to-diameter ratio that ranges from 1.5 to 2.0. Additionally, the cylinder's length to diameter ratio is generally not much larger than 1, and the floor surface is also modestly sized.

Which is better: Steel Balls or Grinding Rods?

Due to the similarities of both steel rods and steel balls, it may be quite a task to determine which is better. Both are efficient, but when deciding which grinding media type is best for you, you should take into account whether the installation requirements for the equipment can be met.

What is single-stage or multiple-stage grinding?

The grinding process might take place all at once or in stages. A rod mill followed by a ball mill (two-stage circuit) or a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill followed by a ball mill are examples of many stages (two-stage circuit). To run a single grinding stage, smaller operations frequently install additional crushing stages. Generally, Rod mill products are rough and are mostly used for rough grinding of ore, which is the first stage of grinding.

What is the Typical Steel Grinding Rod Strength?

Steel Grinding Rods have quite good qualities and strengths. Following are some of them:

  • Steel Grinding Rods have a wear resistance effect that is 150% stronger than that of rolled steel bars.
  • They have excellent wear-resistant properties.
  • They are strong and more durable.
  • They do not crack and wear out easily.

Steel vs iron

Steel is an alloy and iron is a metal, they are essentially distinct from one another. Iron is a metal element that naturally occurs on Earth, to put it simply. Steel, on the other hand, is a manufactured alloy made by mixing iron and carbon. According to yield and ultimate tensile strength, steel is stronger than cast iron. It is also tougher than many other forms of iron when looking at fracture toughness.

How do we test steel grinding rods?

Before any export, we ensure that random samples are tested to make sure that the quality and standards fulfill customer needs. This entails tests for:

  •  impact value
  • hardness
  • chemical element analysis
  • Falling test

Grinding rods that were independently designed have already advanced to a high degree internationally. Before export, we also offer a mill certificate, which is an inspection report from a third party like SGS.

Why should I import steel from China?

  • Steel quality, Governments from importing countries enforce extra measures to ensure the quality of imported steel, with rigorous regulations and high-quality standards an experienced manufacturer will ensure you have the best quality steel available!
  • Steel cost, high production costs, and high competition make buying steel from local suppliers to be more expensive, buying straight from manufacturers like camasteel will cut the cost due to a reduction in the supply chain.
  • Steel Availability, China is known to be the world's manufacturing capital and is a staple for bulk purchases worldwide. With top steel production houses being based in China, buying and shipping steel cannot be easier.

Delivery of Steel Grinding Rods

Steel Grinding Rods are typically exported by sea but can be transported in bundles by truck to job sites thorough checking process occurs before the steel is ready for export. In this process, a few things must be reviewed during packing and labeling. This may include quantity testing, quality testing, weight, etc.

What Is A Grinding Rod?

Grinding rods are steel rods of high quality and have undergone several heat treatments to improve their impact and wear resistance.

What Are Rod And Ball Mills?

Ball mills are machines used to pulverize and consist of a rotating drum usually containing metal balls or pebbles as its grinding equipment. Ball mills are widely used for several purposes. It can be used to grind non-metal and metal ores suitable for hard materials such as gold ore, quartz, copper ore e.t.c.

Rod mills are machines used to pulverize loose iron rods as it's grinding media. Rod mills are also used for magnetic or gravity separation of rare metal ores such as tin and tungsten ore to prevent crushing excessively.

What Is The Difference Between A Rod And Ball Mill?

There are several differences between a Ball and a Rod Mill. They include;

  • Capacity And Granularity

The capacity of a rod mill is between 0.62-189t/h, with a particle discharge size of 0.147-0.833mm. While Ball mills have a capacity of 0.65-615t/h with a particle discharge size of 0.074-0.4mm.

  • Discharge Type

Ball mills employ several discharge methods which include the overflow and grate discharge. While, rod mills employ three discharge types which include end and side discharge, center and side discharge, and overflow discharge type.

  • Cylindrical Ratio

Despite being both cylindrical, they have different cylindrical ratios. The length of the cylinder to the ratio of the diameter of a rod mill is between 1.5 -2.0. while the length of the cylinder to the ratio of the diameter is usually around 1.

  • Grinding Media

Rod mills employ the use of steel rods of a 0.8-1% carbon content with diameters between 50-100mm.  Ball mills employ steel balls as it's grinding media with a diameter lesser than 100mm.

What Is The Difference Between A Rod And A Bar?

Bars are long products that are usually of square, rectangular, hexagonal, or round cross-sections. Bars usually have a diameter between 12-50mm or equivalent.

Rods are metallic thin straight bars. Rods normally have a diameter between 5.5 to 15 millimeters.

What Is The Use Of Grinding Media?

Grinding media are used in mills for crushing and grinding materials during an industrial process. They assist in reducing the size of particles. They are also used to refine materials.

What Is Grinding Media Made Of?

The materials that make up grinding media vary. They include Ceramic Grinding media, cast iron grinding media, and steel grinding media.

Why Is Grinding Important In Mineral Processing?

Grinding is used in mineral processing to achieve the right material size and shape for downstream sorting. It is also used to achieve monomer dissociation between several minerals; gangue, useful and other minerals.

What Is The Difference Between Grinding And Crushing?

Grinding is a controlled procedure used in breaking down materials into micron levels. It is used to obtain the finer fraction of material. While Crushing is breaking down large materials into several pieces. It is used to make materials easily storable and transportable.

How Do I Choose A Grinding Media?

When choosing a grinding media for use the right one must be selected if you wish to achieve the intended purpose. Here are some things to watch out for;

  • Initial Feed size

Small grinding media won't break up large materials easily, so they should not be employed when large materials are involved.

  • Final Particle Size

Your end product should also be put into consideration. Smaller grinding media are more effective in achieving ultrafine particle size.

  • Density

Grinding media of high density generally offers better results. The material being ground should be less dense than the grinding media. Highly viscous particles require grinding media with high density to prevent floating.

  • Hardness

The harder your grinding media, the higher the longevity and competence. Watch out for grinding media made of steel, agate, tungsten carbide, and zirconia, they are known to be the hardest.

  • Abrasiveness

The abrasiveness of the grinding media should also be considered. If a grinding media that is highly abrasive is put in a grinding chamber that's not equally abrasive, there's a possibility of causing damage to the grinding chamber.

What Is A Rod Mill Used For?

A rod mill is often used for magnetic or gravity separation of rare metal ores such as tin ore or tungsten ore to prevent crushing excessively. Rod mills are also sometimes used to crush brittle and low-hardness materials.

What Is The Working Principle Of A Rod Mill?

Rod mills employ the use of long rods as it's grinding media. The long rods grind the ore placed in the mills by tumbling. The grinding actions are done through line contact in between the long rods. Rods spin and tumble in a rough parallel alignment that simulates roll crushers.

Why Grinding Is Useful?

Grinding helps in the reduction of material sizes and shapes. Grinding is also used to guarantee a high degree of precision while finishing a workpiece.

How Grinding is Done?

Grinding is a mechanical process. It makes use of a grinding wheel usually made from abrasive materials that contain little grit particles that range from fine to coarse. The grinding wheel rotates around a central axis while making contact with the workpiece surface and the particles act as the grinding media reducing the materials in shape and size.
