What is a Seamless Steel Pipe?

Seamless steel pipe is a kind of steel pipe with a circular and hollow center that has no seams around the end. It is typically available in carbon steel and stainless steel. It has great resistance to wear and corrosion, and doesn’t rust easily. It can be hot-rolled or cold-rolled.

What are Seamless Steel Pipes Used for?

Seamless steel pipes are used in industries including automotive, oil and gas, construction, fertilizer, chemical, environmental technology, ship building, mechanical, and the boiling industry. Most common and popular uses of seamless steel pipes include transporting fluid, heat transfer, ship building, pumps, boilers, etc.

What are the Benefits of Seamless Steel Pipe?

  • Seamless steel pipes are very durable and withhold high levels of pressure, about 20% higher than welded pipes. Also, they are highly resistant to corrosion.

  • Seamless steel pipes don’t need heat treatment because they are hardened during the manufacturing process.

  • A seamless steel pipe can be used in place of a welded pipe, but not vice versa.

  • Seamless steel pipes have more solid round cross sections than welded pipes.

  • Seamless steel pipes have great strength and can support large amounts of weight.

What is the Difference Between Seamless and Welded Pipe?

The seamless steel pipe is formed by perforating a steel ingot or a solid tube blank, and then hot rolled, cold rolled or cold drawn. The welded steel pipe is a steel pipe which is welded and formed by a steel strip or a steel plate to be deformed into a circular shape or a square shape, and has a joint on the surface.

Is Seamless Pipe Stronger than Welded?

Yes! Seamless steel pipe has better pressure capacity, strength is higher than ERW welded steel pipe. For this reason, seamless steel pipes are applied in high pressure equipment. The seams in welded steel pipes are the weak points of those steel pipes.

What is the Difference between Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled Steel?

Hot Roll and Cold Roll are common methods of manufacturing seamless steel pipes. Manufacturing hot rolled steel involves rolling steel at high temperatures (typically over 1700˚F). Hot rolled steel tends to be cheaper than cold rolled steel. Cold rolled steel is hot rolled steel that has been further processed by being allowed to cool at room temperature and annealed or temper rolled.

Compared to hot rolled steel, cold rolled steel typically has a better, smoother surface that is oily to the touch. Most importantly, cold rolled steel is up to 20% stronger than hot rolled steel due to the strength hardening process.

What is Stainless Steel? Its Relationship with Seamless Pipe?

Stainless steel is manufactured from steel alloy. The alloying elements enable stainless steel to be corrosion resistant and have long-lasting durability.

Common applications of stainless steel pipe includes:

  •  Food processing

  • Textile operations

  • Breweries

  • Water treatment plants

  • Oil and gas processing

  • Fertilizers and pesticides

  • Chemical applications

  • Construction

  • Pharmaceuticals

  • Automotive components

Seamless steel pipe is typically available in carbon steel and stainless steel. For this reason, seamless steel pipe is highly corrosion resistant and long-lasting.

Seamless carbon steel pipe is a kind of seamless pipe made of carbon steel. Carbon steel is a basic steel that is a combination of iron and carbon. It is classified by how much carbon content is mixed in with the iron.Carbon steel is known for its strength and its ability to withstand very high temperatures.

Compared to stainless steel, carbon steel is more likely to rust and more brittle.

How to Transport Seamless Steel Pipes?

Seamless steel pipes must be packaged and shipped carefully in order to prevent damage to the pipes. They also need to be sealed from too much moisture when packaging in bundles, especially if they have smaller diameter. They are typically exported by sea but can also be transported in bundles by trucks.

What Is Seamless Steel Pipe

Seamless Steel Pipes are whole round steel that is perforated, and steel pipes whose surfaces are without welds. Seamless steel pipe is made up of just one piece of metal and doesn't have a crease(seam) or a welded joint.

Seamless steel pipes are known for their desirable and flawless finishing, making them highly demanded. They are manufactured in rectangular, circular, or square shapes. Seamless steel pipes are strong and durable because they are not welded, and neither do they have joints, meaning the pipes have a uniform structure ensuring uniform distribution of strength.

What Is the Difference Between Seamless and Welded Pipe

There is a thin line between welded pipes and seamless steel. However here are some of the differences between welded and seamless steel pipes;

  • Length

Seamless steel pipe is often shorter than welded pipes. This is due to the difficulties in the manufacturing process of seamless steel pipes. Welded pipes can be manufactured in several sizes and lengths.

  • Cost

Seamless steel pipe is far more expensive than welded pipes, due to difficulties in that manufacturing process and the cost of materials used during production. Welded pipes have an easier manufacturing process which makes the cost of production lower.

  • Pipe Surface

Seamless steel pipe has a rough surface which is due to the extrusion process it goes through. However, welded pipes have surfaces smoother than seamless pipes.

  • Process Of Production

Seamless steel pipe has a complex manufacturing process which makes the manufacturing and time for procurement longer. However, welded pipes have a far simpler and shorter manufacturing process and procurement time.

  • Application

Seamless steel pipes are more durable and strong making them a high choice for high temperature, sensitive units, high temperature, and corrosive environments. While on the other hand welded pipes are applied in low pressure and less corrosive environments.

  • Testing

Seamless steel pipes don't need to be tested before use, while welded pipes have to be tested before it's used.

  • Shape

Seamless steel pipe has better ovality and is round while welded pipes have poor ovality.

  • Strength

Seamless steel can withstand very high pressure, while welded pipes can withstand only 20% less stress due to the welds.

How Do You Make A Seamless Steel Pipe

Seamless steel pipe is made from a robust and round piece of steel known as a billet. The billet would have to be heated first, after heating it would be stretched and rolled over a firm or frame until the pipe becomes hollow. The shape of a seamless steel pipe is formed by being passed through a perforated tube.

At this point, the seamless steel pipe is then passed through the following procedure; cold rolled, hot rolled, and cold draw. A seamless steel pipe that is hot rolled is manufactured through forging billets, perforating it, rolling, and then shaping. The tube is manufactured through the industrial extrusion process and is used in the manufacturing of seamless steel pipes with thick walls.

On the other hand, the cold drawn process is used to manufacture seamless steel pipes by employing cold drawn technology, which makes the production of thin walls and small diameter seamless steel pipes possible. It is also important if the goal is to produce a pipe with a smooth internal surface. Some seamless steel pipes tend to harden while manufacturing, in which case the manufacturer doesn't need to employ heat treatment methods.

How Do I Know If The Pipe Is Seamless

The easiest way to identify a seamless steel pipe is to look at its appearance. Seamless Steel Pipes don't have any joints throughout the length and in their cross-section. There is an absence of welding joints. It often has a wall thickness of ⅛ inches to 26 inches.

How seamless steel pipe is manufactured

Seamless Stella pipe is manufactured using the process that heats and molds solid billet into a cylindrical-like shape and then rolls it continuously until it's stretched and hollowed. Since the hollowed center is shaped irregularly, a piercer point shaped like a bullet is pushed through the center of the billet as it is being rolled. After piercing, the pipe might still have an irregular shape and thickness, which is corrected by another set of rolling mills.

Is seamless pipe more expensive?

Seamless pipes are more expensive. It's about 30% higher than the price of welded pipes, and the price tends to increase if the diameter is greater.

It is in several industries which include transportation, building and construction, medicine, energy, research, logistics, and food.

What Is The Difference Between Steel Pipe and Iron Pipe

Iron and Steel pipes might appear to be similar at first.  They might appear to be identical because they are both alloys of metal. The following are the difference between steel and iron pipes;

  • Carbon Content

The main difference between iron and steel pipes is the carbon content. While iron pipes have a carbon content of 3.0%-3.9%, steel has a carbon content of about 0.6-0.8%. With the carbon content, you can easily detect the pipes' hardness, hardening ability, and strength.

  • Manufacturing Process

Another significant difference between steel and iron pipe is the manufacturing process. Iron pipes are manufactured with seams making it possible to be connected to other pipes using connector valves. It also has a larger diameter inside than steel pipes. Steel pipes have to be welded for them to be used in certain industries. Iron pipes are stiffer and have thicker walls.

  • Abrasion Resistance

Due to the high volume of graphite present, iron pipes have a higher resistance to abrasion than steel pipes. This is why iron pipes are often used in friction wear mechanisms.
